Tourists are in danger: a barge sunk a century ago slides into Niagara Falls

The sinking barge that sunk in 1918 (it is a scandal, or a scout boat) has moved and is closely approaching the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side. Writes about it with the BBC.

101 a year ago, a barge detached from a tugboat one and a half kilometers upstream from a waterfall on the Niagara River. When this happened, Gustav Loftberg and James Harris on board immediately realized that they were approaching a waterfall.

They decided to open the hatches at the bottom of the vessel to fill the hold with water and make it heavier; they also managed to direct the barge to the stones, where it got stuck, having spent more than a century in 500 meters from the cliff.

The sailors were rescued the next morning.

At the end of October 2019, a powerful storm hit the area with strong winds and rain.

For the first time in a century, the barge moved and again headed towards the waterfall, advancing 50 meters, until it again hit the pitfalls and got stuck.

David Adames, who heads the Niagara National Park in Ontario, says his staff is closely monitoring the barge and believes that it can remain in the new location for a long period.

If the barge nevertheless eventually slides into the waterfall, it is unlikely that anything will remain of it, since over the course of a century it has thoroughly rusted.

As a result of the storm, the barge rolled over on its side, and the rapid flow of the river could again take it down from the rocks. But this may not happen.

The problem is that on the lake, where the waterfall flows, there are usually many tourists on pleasure boats. Authorities say they will warn everyone if they notice that the barge is approaching the waterfall again.
