Trump proposed to arm teachers of American schools
US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the idea of allowing school teachers to carry weapons, and also to repeal the rules according to which the carrying of weapons near schools is prohibited.
Trump made this statement at the White House, during a conference on violence with firearms, with the participation of teachers and students from the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas School in Florida, where as a result of shooting perished 17 man writes Air force.
The President supported this idea amid the increasingly loud demands of schoolchildren and teachers who survived school shooting in Florida so that the authorities would do everything possible to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Donald Trump also supported the proposal to tighten the system of inspections wishing to purchase a firearm.
Shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas School in Florida has become the deadliest in terms of number of victims since 2012. The 2012 Sandy Hook school attack killed 26 people.
The accused of the mass murder, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, was detained an hour later and fully admitted his guilt.
“We will conduct very strict checks, especially on the issue of mental health [of those who want to purchase weapons],” the president told schoolchildren who survived the attack.
“These are not just words like they used to be,” Trump added. “This has been going on too long, too often, and we will do it.”
At the same time, Trump supported a proposal long put forward by the National Rifle Association of the United States to allow teachers and other school employees to carry weapons.
"If you had a teacher who knew how to handle a firearm, it's quite possible he could stop the attack pretty quickly," Trump said.
He added that the offer only applies to people “well-versed in the use of firearms.”
President Trump also criticized the creation of zones around schools, within which the carrying of weapons is prohibited.
“A gun-free zone for a maniac—and they are all cowards—means, ‘let’s go in, let’s attack,’” the president said.
Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was killed at a school in Florida, expressed his indignation to the president.
“We are here because my daughter no longer has a voice,” he said.
“She was killed last week, she was taken from us. She received nine bullets on the third floor. We, the whole country, have done nothing for our children.”
“I’m outraged,” added Andrew Pollack.
On Wednesday, the survivors of the students and teachers at the Parkland school went to Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, in an attempt to convince state legislators to restrict the sale of semi-automatic weapons.
Demonstrations in support of this demand were also held in Washington, Chicago and Pittsburgh.
