“A monster lived under one roof with us”: the family who sheltered the Florida arrow

Nicholas Cruz was too naive for his age and looked depressed when James and Kimberly Sned invited him to live in their home in Parkland, Florida. But it seemed to them that he was cute and was becoming more and more happy while living with them. The way 19-year-olds turned into a murderer is still a mystery to them, told the people who sheltered the guy in an interview South Florida Sun Sentinel.

“There was a monster living under the same roof as us, and we didn’t know it. We didn’t see that side of him,” Kimberly Snead said.

Son Snedov asked his parents if his friend could stay with them a bit, for Thanksgiving in 2017. Cruz’s adoptive mother died of pneumonia on November 1, leaving him an orphan. He did not live long in the family of a friend of the deceased mother in Lantana, but because of a conflict with her, he needed to find new housing.

Snedy quickly agreed, realizing that the boy was most likely very depressed because of the death of his mother.

Five days before the shooting, Kimberly Sned led Cruise to a psychotherapist she was visiting. Cruz said he is open to therapy, but does not like to take medicine. He took the doctor’s business card and tried to figure out what expenses his medical insurance would cover.

James, 48, is a veteran and military intelligence analyst who served in the Middle East from 1988 to 1996. Kimberly, 49, is a neonatal intensive care nurse who cares for babies born prematurely.

The couple told Cruz that strict rules were in their home, and he followed them.

Snedy grew up in families where there was a weapon, and own it, but at the same time insist on its safe storage and use.

They forced Cruise to buy a safe for weapons to put in his room on the day he moved in with them. Cruise had several firearms, including an AR-15 and two other rifles. Cruise was a hunter and also owned knives, pistols and several types of weapons used for hunting.

Sned believed he had the only key to this safe, but as it turned out, Cruz probably kept another key in his possession. The family kept their own rifles, bought after burglary a couple of years ago, in a separate locked safe.

They told Cruz that in order to take the weapon, he had to get their permission. Since November, he made such a request only twice, once they allowed to take a weapon, refused a second time.

According to the couple, it seemed that Cruise’s mother had spoiled him and treated him like a small child.

“He was very naive. He wasn’t stupid, just naive,” James admitted.

He could not cook, could not use the microwave. He could not wash his own things, nor was he accustomed to clean up after himself.

He did not drive the car, but bought a bicycle and rode it to work in the nearest Dollar Tree.

Snedy raised their three sons and took up the education of Cruise.

They insisted that he enroll in adult education courses conducted by the school district and take him to school every day.

It seemed that everything was fine with him, he wanted to serve in the infantry. A visit by an army recruiter to school interested him.

As far as Snedam was aware, Cruz was not familiar with any of the victims of the execution, and they are not aware of any dissatisfaction on his part regarding any of the people who were killed. The family has no idea why he did it.

According to Snedov, the evening before the crime was the same as the other evenings, and Cruz behaved as usual.

Cruise had some strange eating habits. He added chocolate chip cookies to his steak and cheese sandwich. The day before the shooting, he went to sleep around 20: 00, as he often did before.

Snedy assumed that in school over Cruise scoffed: he was such a child who would have attracted the attention of a bully.

According to them, he really wanted to have a girlfriend, he seemed very lonely. They know nothing about the rumors that appeared after the crime, that he broke up with the girl and pursued her.

They also did not see signs of animal abuse on his part. Snedy love animals, two dogs and six cats live in their house, and they would have kicked out the guy if he had a bad attitude towards their pets. They thought that Cruz liked their animals.

On the morning of the crime, Cruz told them he would not be going to school: “Today is Valentine’s Day, and I will not be going to school on Valentine’s Day,” he said.

Cruise had a fracture of his right hand after falling from the steps in their house about three weeks ago. They suggest that he removed the cast before shooting.

Kimberly saw Cruise around 10: February 00 14 before she went away on business. He said he was going fishing when the woman returned, he was no longer there. She went to bed because she had to change at the hospital at night.

On that day, Cruz sent several messages to his son. In one of them, he asked what classroom the boy was in and said that he would soon “see a movie.”

Later he wrote that he had “something important” that he wanted to tell the teenager, but after that he said that it didn’t matter.

Police later found out that all these messages were sent by Cruise from a taxi on the way to school. The last message he sent when the car was already parked near the school was “Yoh!”.

The Snedy suggests that Cruz moved out of the house of his late mom's girlfriend in Lantana due to tensions about his weapon and possible misunderstandings about money.

Cruz told them that he inherited at least 800 000 dollars from his dead parents. Most of the money will be received by him when he turns 22 of the year. The family saw documents confirming the guy's words.

Cruz thought that a family friend in Lantana had stolen money from him, but Snedy suspects that she is innocent, and he just became a victim of identity theft. They reported to the police about 2900 dollars of fraudulent payments made from his cards without his knowledge or consent.

Around 14: February 30 14 son of a couple in a panic called his father, he said that he managed to escape through the fence to the territory of a nearby school, but he heard gunshots and was scared. Father told him to go to the nearest Walmart, from where he took his son.

After that, the man received a call from the police asking where his son Nick was. James said that the boy was not his son, and added that he didn’t know anything about his whereabouts.

Then the man asked the police to check if his wife was OK, since she was alone in the house with Nick.

The police broke into the house in search of Cruise, but did not find a guy there. It later turned out that he was arrested elsewhere.

The son of the couple was interrogated on suspicion of involvement in the crime because of SMS Cruise, but the police quickly realized that the teenager had no relation to this and did not know about the reprisal that was being prepared.

They also saw Cruise, who at that moment was brought to the police station.

“Really, Nick? Really?” Kimberly shouted at him.

“He said he was sorry. He apologized. He looked lost, completely lost. And that was the last time we saw him,” James said.

Recall that February 14 in high school in Parkland, Florida, shooting occurred as a result of which at least 17 people died and several injured. It is reported that at first the attacker triggered a fire alarm that caused a panic at school, and then opened fire on the people running.
