Hearings on the first lawsuit of Ukraine against Russia, where the Russian Federation is accused of violating two UN conventions, began on June 6 and will end on June 14. Accordingly, a decision could potentially be made at the end of 2023 - at the beginning of 2024.
Now the court must decide whether it has the authority to open the main court session, writes DW.
Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice on Russia's violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide on February 26, 2022. The Russian Federation did not participate in the meeting on March 7, 2022. On March 16, the International Court of Justice, in a ruling on provisional measures, ordered Russia to immediately cease hostilities against Ukraine.
Meanwhile, another lawsuit from Ukraine against Russia is pending in the UN court, related to Russia’s probable violation of two international conventions - on the fight against the financing of terrorism and the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. Ukraine filed this lawsuit back in 2017.
In it, Ukraine proves that Russia violated the relevant conventions by arming the armed groups of its puppet "republics" in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and by its policy towards non-Russian ethnic groups in the occupied Crimea.
