A woman suffered kidney damage after visiting a hairdresser. Glyoxylic acid, which is used in salon treatments, may be to blame for this, reports FoxNews.

A 26-year-old Tunisian woman suffered three acute kidney injuries between June 2020 and July 2022, according to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Doctors have linked some hair smoothing and straightening products to kidney damage.

The woman in the study had no health problems when she sought medical attention for vomiting, fever, diarrhea and back pain.

“Each episode of acute kidney injury coincided with a hair treatment session at the same salon on the day symptoms began,” the article says. “The patient reported a burning sensation during each procedure, followed by ulcers on the scalp.”

Dangerous procedure

Upon examination, medical staff discovered that her blood test was positive for elevated plasma creatinine levels. Plasma creatinine is a product of muscle activity. When it enters the blood, it is filtered out by the kidneys.

When a woman went to the salon, the hairdresser applied a cream containing 10% glyoxylic acid to her hair. This chemical, according to the researchers, caused kidney damage.

“The results prove that hair straightening cream containing glyoxylic acid is responsible for nephropathy. Kidney damage is caused by calcium oxalate after hair straightening procedures of the type described here, the article states. “Glyoxylic acid has been patented and recently introduced into hair straightening products as a seemingly safer alternative to formaldehyde-containing products.”

“Given the potential nephrotoxicity of topical glyoxylic acid, products containing this compound should be avoided. We propose to stop selling them,” the authors of the article said.

The publication notes that 26 patients in Israel suffered acute kidney damage after Brazilian-style hair straightening procedures.

In 2022, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found that chemical hair straightening products may increase women's risk of developing uterine cancer.
