Fire Risk: Hundreds of Thousands of Popular Doorbells Recalled in US
Some 2nd generation devices can overheat if installed incorrectly, writes The Verge.

Amazon's smart home brand Ring has recalled approximately 350 000nd generation video doorbells sold in the US due to fire and fire concerns. According to a report released by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Ring received 2 reports of doorbells catching fire and causing minor property damage, and 23 reports of minor burns. Ring's website says damaged doorbells do not need to be returned, but users should follow updated brand guidelines.
While Ring claims there is no risk with proper doorbell installation, the CPSC notes that the device can overheat if the wrong screws are used. Ring reports that it has received 85 reports of incidents where people used the wrong screws that could damage the doorbell battery. Ring has released an updated set of instructions for its video intercom, which specifically warns users not to use any screws other than "smart security screws" to attach the video intercom to the bracket.

“Customers do not need to return their devices,” Ring officials said. “We have worked and continue to work with the CPSC on this issue and have contacted customers who purchased the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) to ensure they received the updated user manual and followed the instructions for installing the device.”
The recall affects 2nd generation video doorbell doorbells sold this year between June and October for about $100 with model number 5UMpting. You can enter your device's serial number on the Ring website to see if your doorbell is included in the list. While there shouldn't be any problems if installed correctly, Ring says owners who have already installed their 2nd generation Ring doorbells incorrectly should contact customer service.
