May Cause Cancer: Popular Diabetes Cure Is Recalled in US
Two lots of metformin, a widely used type 2 diabetes drug, are being recalled due to possible contamination with a potentially carcinogenic compound. Metformin is intended to lower blood glucose levels, writes CNN.

Nostrum Laboratories Inc., based in Kansas City, Missouri, announced on Monday November 2 that it is voluntarily withdrawing Metformin HCl Extended Release Tablets, USP 750 mg, according to a recall posted United States Food and Drug Administration.
Testing has shown that the levels of nitrosamine (NDMA) in the withdrawn pills are above acceptable limits.
The chemical NDMA is considered a possible carcinogen by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It is an organic chemical used to make liquid rocket fuel and can be a by-product of manufacturing, including pharmaceuticals. It is also found in water and foods, including meat, dairy products, and vegetables.
NDMA has also been found in some blood pressure medications and antacids.
This is the last of metformin review seriesassociated with potentially cancer-causing contaminants in drugs.
Nostrum said it received no reports of side effects related to the recall. The company also said it is notifying its distributors and arranging the return of the recalled product.

The recall product is packaged in HDPE bottles of 100 tablets per NDC 29033-056-01.
The recall affects Metformin HCl Extended Release Tablets, USP lot 750 mg under NDC 29033-056-01, lot numbers MET200101 and MET200301, which expire on 05/2022. It can be defined as an oblong cream-colored tablet embossed with "NM7".
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 34 million people in the U.S. have diabetes—about 1 in 10—with about 90-95% of them diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
