Racism, sexism, homophobia: the most biased cities and states of the USA
American portal Abodo published a study based on approximately 12 millions of tweets posted by users on Twitter from June 2014 to December 2015.
The purpose of this paper was to study the attitudes of US residents, which they use in their tweets, including those indicating races, ethnic characteristics, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.
These results, according to the authors, testify to many things, especially about local sentiments in various cities and states of the United States, which, undoubtedly, may be important when choosing a place of residence.
Among other things, the state of Louisiana holds the lead in the number of tweets against the black population, and the palm among the individual cities belongs to Baltimore, Virginia, where not so long after black death of freddie gray at the hands of the cops passed mass demonstrationsresulting in clashes with the police.
Another surprise is California's leadership among states with the most negative attitudes toward Latinos. Among the cities on the first line is Bakersfield, located 180 km from Los Angeles. It is followed immediately by four other California cities - Chula Vista, Modesto, Fontana and Riverside. In addition, at number 9 in the Top 10 is Miami, Florida, and rounding out the top ten is San Antonio, Texas.
Louisiana also leads in the number of hate tweets directed at women. True, if the word “bitch” is removed from the study, the leadership goes to Nevada. In terms of cities, New Orleans is in first place, and Atlanta, Houston, the above-mentioned Baltimore, Cleveland and Detroit are also in the top ten.
When it comes to homophobia, the leaders here are Buffalo, New York, as well as five California cities. It is noteworthy that the top ten includes cities in Texas, Nebraska and Louisiana - states in which the level of support for the legalization of same-sex marriage is lower than the US average.
The final table takes into account all insults used by American Twitter users. The absolute leader, as you might have guessed, is Louisiana (more than a thousand tweets for every 100 thousand). Nevada and Texas are in the middle. California is in seventh place.
