The penguin swam 3 thousand km from Antarctica to New Zealand: this is the third case in 60 years

An incredibly rare and unexpected visitor has been found off the coast of New Zealand - an Adelie penguin. This species lives exclusively off the coast of Antarctica and on the islands closest to the mainland, so it is almost impossible to see it anywhere else. Writes about this with the BBC.

This is the third recorded case when a representative of the Adelie species was seen in New Zealand, because its habitat is three thousand kilometers away. The first two times he appeared in 1962 and 1993.

Colonies of this penguin species were first discovered by the expedition of French explorer Jules Dumont-Durville in 1840. He named them after his wife Adele, and the place where these flightless sea birds were discovered was Adele's Land.

The first penguin on the New Zealand beach was noticed by local resident Harry Singh. At first he thought it was a large soft toy forgotten on the shore.

“The penguin did not move for an hour and looked exhausted and confused,” Singh explained.

According to him, while he was waiting for the arrival of a special group of rescuers, most of all was worried that the penguin would not go back into the water, because in his condition he would become an easy prey for marine predators that live in abundance off the coast of New Zealand.

In addition, on the beach where the penguin is nailed, dogs are often walked without leashes.

Severe exhaustion

The treatment of this flightless sea bird, which the New Zealanders have already called Pingu, was taken up by a XNUMX-year-old penguin rescue specialist biologist Thomas Sträckle, along with a team of veterinarians.

The doctor says that for many years he worked with many species of penguins, but never met Adele in these parts.

Pingu's analyzes showed that the bird was emaciated and dehydrated. For several days, the penguin has been receiving food through a special tube.

When he fully recovers, he will be released by the water, but whether Adele wants to make the return trip to Antarctica, scientists do not know.

According to them, if the occurrence of this species of penguins becomes more frequent, it will be an alarming sign, indicating a change in the habitat of these seabirds.

In February of this year, the highest air temperature in history was recorded at the northernmost tip of Antarctica: +20,75 degrees Celsius.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), over the past 12 years, the area of ​​Antarctic glaciers has been rapidly shrinking under the influence of global warming.
