A new virus from China can infect people around the world
The number of people infected with the mysterious virus that appeared in China is significantly higher than official figures. Writes about it with the BBC.
45 cases of the disease have been laboratory-confirmed, but, according to British experts, this figure is close to 1700. It is known that in December two people died from the virus that causes pneumonia. The first outbreak was recorded in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
“Now I'm more worried than a week ago,” commented epidemiologist Professor Neil Ferguson.
The study was conducted at the Center for Global Analysis of Infectious Diseases MRC at Imperial College London, which advises the UK government and the World Health Organization.
Singapore and Hong Kong have therefore introduced additional control measures for tourists. The United States also announced similar events at three major airports in the country - San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
The main criterion for assessing the magnitude of the problem was the number of cases detected in other countries.
The virus was first detected in Wuhan, but has recently been detected in Thailand and Japan.
“It made me worried,” said Professor Ferguson. “The fact that Wuhan“ exported ”the virus to other countries means that there should be much more infected than reported.”
Accurate data is not yet available, but the outbreak can be modeled on the basis of data on the nature of the virus, the local population and flights.
Wuhan International Airport serves 19 million passengers, of which 3400 travel daily to other countries.
Detailed calculations, the results of which were made publicly available for publication in a scientific journal, showed 1700 cases.
What will happen at US airports
Passengers traveling to the United States from Wuhan will have to undergo an extended medical examination due to concerns about a new coronavirus, writes USA Today.
Inspections will be conducted at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and the San Francisco International Airport. Approximately 100 additional employees US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be involved in the examinations.
The CDC conducted airport checks only once: in 2014, in response to concerns about the Ebola virus.
Health workers examined thousands of passengers from three West African countries for the presence of the Ebola virus, but found no disease.
The CDC said that some of the dozens of patients likely affected by the 2019-nCoV outbreak could have contracted the disease from other people.
Fever, coughing and shortness of breath are some of the most common symptoms of the new coronavirus.
CDC described the checks as “preventative precautions.”
What does it mean
Chinese authorities say there was no spread of the virus from one sick person to another.
Instead, they associate the outbreak with the seafood market in Wuhan, where, among other things, they sell live animals.
According to Professor Ferguson, it is too early to panic, but it is worthwhile to seriously consider the possibility of transmission of the pathogen from person to person.
“Given what we know about coronaviruses, it is unlikely that animals can cause infection,” authorities say.

However, understanding how a new virus spreads is important in assessing potential risks.
What do we know about the virus
Patients were sampled to examine the virus in the laboratory.
Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization have concluded that coronavirus causes the infection.
A large number of viruses belong to coronaviruses, but only six of them (and with the new virus seven) can infect humans.
In 2002-2003, this deadly disease that arose in China, claimed the lives of more than 700 people in different countries.
Then more than 8000 people fell ill in 26 countries.
“People still recall with horror SARS. This is the reason for the current fear, but now we are much better prepared to withstand such a disease, ”says Dr. Josie Golding.
A new virus, due to which pneumonia develops in patients, has already claimed the lives of two people.
What experts say
The World Health Organization also stated that they are monitoring the outbreak and are in contact with the Chinese authorities.
According to the head of the Wellcome Trust charity Jeremy Farrar, this is only the beginning.
“There are many obscure and unknown moments. However, we know that the disease can be transmitted through an infected person. There are reports of new cases in China and other countries, so we conclude that the virus will spread. ”
Professor Jonathan Ball of the University of Nottingham said: “Until large-scale laboratory tests are carried out, it is very difficult to determine the actual number of people infected.”
