Mass shooting occurred in Germany: 9 killed
Nine people were killed in a shooting in the city of Hanau east of Frankfurt am Main (Germany), police in the state of Hesse said. The attacker himself is also dead, another body was found next to him. According to German authorities, there is reason to believe that the shooter was an extremist of ultra-right views. On the night of Thursday, February 20, shooting occurred in two hookah cafes in Hanau. First, the unknown opened fire in a bar in the city center, and then disappeared by car. Soon data began to come about shooting at a bar in the west of Hanau.

Initially, eight dead were reported. One of the seriously wounded people later died, and five were seriously injured.

According to law enforcement agencies, the shooter committed suicide at home after escaping from a crime scene, Reuters writes.

What is known about the attacker
Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Boyt said the case was seen as a terrorist act. According to preliminary data, the shooter's motive was xenophobia, Boyt said.
The suspect was a German citizen with a weapons permit, and ammunition was found in his car. He held ultra-right views - this follows from the letter and video he left behind.
“Investigations into the identities of the victims and the attacker are ongoing,” police said in a statement.

“It’s hard to imagine a more terrible evening. We will have to deal with this for a long time, we will remember it for a long time. I am deeply shocked,” said Hanau Mayor Klaus Kaminski.

Bundestag member from Hanau Katja Leukert said: “I hope that the wounded will recover. This is a terrible event for all of us."
“My thoughts are with the people of Hanau, where a terrible crime took place,” Germany’s official ruler, Steffen Seibert, wrote on Twitter.
He also said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel canceled a planned trip to Leopoldina (National Academy of Sciences) in Halle due to shooting in Hanau.
According to him, the chancellor decided to stay in the office in order to continuously receive new information about the events in Hanau.
