'It was a crappy speech': Pelosi defiantly tore the text of Trump's speech in Congress

The traditional speech of US President Donald Trump in Congress was marked by several controversial episodes, writes «РИА Новости».

On the evening of February 4, Trump addressed the senators and members of the House of Representatives with an annual appeal, in which he spoke about the situation in the country. Typically, long established procedures are followed during this event.

In particular, before the speech, the president passes the text of the speech to the vice president, who is the head of the Senate, and the speaker of the House of Representatives. Usually this is accompanied by a handshake - for example, that is exactly what happened a year ago.

This time, Trump did not depart from tradition and handed over the speech folders to Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Having received the folder, Pelosi, as it seemed, extended a hand for a handshake, but Trump simply turned away and stood in place for a speech. The speaker smiled nervously. However, Pelosi’s gesture can be regarded as an invitation to take the podium.

After the speech, Trump also did not shake hands with Pence and Pelosi and simply headed for the exit, shaking hands with his party members along the way. The speaker at that time tore several sheets of paper from the table where the text of the president’s speech lay.

Pence, in turn, did not ignore Pelosi and shook her hand.

In addition, the media drew attention to the fact that before the head of state speaks, the Speaker of the House of Representatives usually introduces him to Congress with the words: “It is my great honor to introduce the President of the United States...” However, this time Pelosi limited herself to the words: “Members of Congress, the President of the United States !” After this, Republicans began chanting: “Four more years!” - referring to Trump's re-election for a new term.

Pelosi later told reporters that "it was polite of her, given the alternatives" she had regarding Trump.

“It was a crappy speech,” she added of the president’s speech.

It is worth noting that Trump’s speech took place against the backdrop of the impeachment that the Democrats of the House of Representatives, led by Pelosi, announced to him. Today, a Senate vote must be held, according to the results of which it will be decided whether the legislators recognize the president guilty or not. Trump is expected to be acquitted.

Trump became the third president in US history to be impeached. Democrats say he delayed congressional support for Ukraine, approved by Congress, demanding in return for political service from President Vladimir Zelensky in the form of an investigation against Joe Biden. Thus, according to the resolution on impeachment, Trump exceeded his authority, and then also prevented Congress from investigating. The president himself claims that he only required the Ukrainian authorities to fight corruption.
