#KyivNotKiev: Washington Post changes the spelling of the capital of Ukraine, New York Times - refuses

The New York Times said it would continue to write the name of the Ukrainian capital as Kiev, by analogy with the names of other foreign cities.

The American publication The Washington Post is changing the transliteration of writing the main city of Ukraine as part of the #KyivNotKiev campaign, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country, writes Gordonua.com with reference to the Voice of America.

“The Washington Post is changing the writing style of the capital of Ukraine. From now on, we will represent it as Kyiv, not Kiev. These changes take effect immediately. The changes are consistent with the wishes of the Ukrainian government, as well as recent adjustments adopted by other media organizations, ”noted in WP.

The Ukrainian Embassy in the USA welcomed the decision of the newspaper.

At the same time, the editorial board of The New York Times refused to change the transliteration of the name of the Ukrainian capital, writes Voice of America.

Vice-president of communications of the newspaper Daniel Rhodes explained that the editors discussed this issue with the international department and decided to continue to use the Kiev option, “in order to comply with the approach to writing the names of other foreign cities.”

“For example, we do not write Köln (Cologne, Cologne) or Firenze (Florence, Florence). We believe that for most English-speaking readers the name Kiev is more familiar than Kyiv, so we prefer the most stable and familiar spelling. We know about discussions in this connection. We will monitor the situation, ”said Rhodes.

The #KyivNotKiev online campaign was launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in October 2018.

On June 12, the U.S. Geographic Names Council decided to replace the official name of the capital of Ukraine in the international base with Kiev to Kyiv. The Ukrainian Embassy in the United States said that they are oriented toward the American base all over the world, so in the near future the name of the Ukrainian capital will be corrected everywhere.

To date, only nine influential news publications around the world have switched to writing the name of the capital of Ukraine as Kyiv, according to the official list of the campaign conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine #KyivnotKiev. Among them are The Guardian and the Air Force.
