Immigration crisis: 220 illegal immigrants have crossed the US border since October

Those 220 people arrive during traditionally less busy months at the border, meaning those numbers are likely to rise significantly as the spring and summer months approach.

The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced last week that there were 2022 illegal migrant crossings in January 153. In January 941, there were 2021.

In January, 62 migrants were released in the United States. In December 573, 2021 illegal border crossings by migrants were registered, and in November - 178.

The Biden administration is firmly committed to the strategy of addressing the "root causes" in Central America while opening up avenues for asylum. But Republicans have accused the administration of fueling the crisis by abandoning Trump-era border-protection policies such as building a border wall and the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPPs).

While the Biden administration was forced by a federal court to reinstate the MPP, which held migrants in Mexico for their hearings, it sought to end the program in an alternative way. Meanwhile, the administration has called for an amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country, as well as sharply curtailed domestic measures by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

While the administration is defending its reputation on the border, blaming the Trump administration for closing safe haven routes and warning that its own root cause approach will not resolve the crisis "overnight."

Republicans are getting more impatient with the crisis — attorneys general and lawmakers in the House of Representatives recently called for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mallorcas to step down over the crisis.
