'It's brilliant': Trump admired Putin's actions in Ukraine

Shortly before Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled the start of a military operation in Ukraine, Donald Trump continued to lavish praise on him, reports Yahoo! News.

Speaking at a political fundraiser held at his Mar-a-Lago country club in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump lauded the Russian dictator's strategic success.

“I mean, he's taking over the country with two-penny sanctions,” Trump said. “I'd say that's pretty smart.” He takes over a country—literally a huge, vast area, a big piece of land with a lot of people—and just takes it for himself.”

When the Russian military launched an offensive into Ukraine, explosions were heard in Kiev and Kharkov, cities where millions of Ukrainians live. US intelligence agencies have warned that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could result in the deaths of 50 civilians, 000 Ukrainian soldiers and 25 Russian troops. A war between two neighbors could also spark a massive refugee crisis across Europe.

On February 22, Trump made headlines by praising Putin's decision to send troops to Ukraine to support separatists in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions.

“It’s brilliant,” he said on the radio program. — So, Putin is now declaring that this territory is independent - most of Ukraine. Did I mention how reasonable this is? This is the strongest peacekeeping force I have ever seen. There were more army tanks than I had ever seen. They will keep the peace. And this is good".

Trump was quick to reassure his audience that while Putin is a "smart" leader, he could never achieve his goals in Ukraine if Trump was still in power.

“This would never have happened, in a million years, this would never have happened,” Trump said. “And I know him [Putin] very well.” I know him probably about as well as I know anyone in this room other than Dr. Ronnie [Jackson].”
