California Governor Recall Campaign Ready to Move to Vote: What's Next
Campaigners to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom have collected enough valid signatures to qualify to vote, state election officials said April 26. This will likely lead to the second such election in state history. Yahoo.
"The people of California have done what politicians thought was impossible," said Orrin Heatley, a retired county sheriff's sergeant who began the recall effort last year. “Our work is just beginning.” Now the real campaign begins."
Heatley spearheaded a signature collection that began last June and picked up steam in the fall as frustration grew over Newsom's coronavirus-related actions. California's secretary of state said more than 26 million signatures had been validated as of April 1,6, about 100 more than required.
The people who signed the petitions now have 30 days to withdraw their signatures, although this is unlikely to be an obstacle for the issue to reach voters.
The recall of Newsom, a first-term Democrat once considered encouraging by the White House, will be one of the country's loudest political races this year. In March, he launched a campaign to counter these efforts with the support of Democrats, including US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Until other Democrats opposed him.
“I am not going to take this fight lying down,” said a fundraising appeal Newsom sent out shortly after the signatures were announced. “There’s too much at stake and I intend to win.”

In the fall, elections are likely, and voters will face two questions: should Newsom be recalled and who should replace him? Votes for the second question will only be counted if more than half answer “yes” to the first.
If Newsom survives the recall, he will be re-elected in 2022.
Republicans running to replace Newsom include former San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer, reality TV star and former Olympic decathlon champion Caitlyn Jenner, who never ran for office, businessman John Cox, who lost heavily to Newsom in 2018. and former Congressman Doug Ose are also running. Dozens of other candidates, serious and not, are expected to take part in the race.
The only time a governor faced recall in an election was in 2003, when Democrat Gray Davis was expelled and replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. Democrats believe Davis suffered politically when Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, also a Democrat, entered the race.
Newsom won election in 2018 with the support of more than 60% of voters. Recalling him will be difficult in a state where Democrats dominate and only a quarter of the state's registered voters are Republicans, about the same number as those who have "no party preference."
But organizers are seeing an opening among voters of all political views, outraged by Newsom's handling of the pandemic, and those frustrated by Sacramento's one-party rule. Republicans have not held office in the state since 2006, when voters gave Schwarzenegger a second term. Organizers say about 30% of those who signed the petition were Democrats or Independents.

Newsom's actions during the pandemic have surpassed all recall efforts, especially after he was caught dining at a trendy restaurant at a lobbyist's birthday party last fall urging state residents to stay home.
Heatley decided to conduct a recall in early 2020, motivated not by Newsom's pandemic policy, but by his support for illegal immigrants and other liberal policies.
