The homeless crisis in Los Angeles peaks. Now the city has 36 000 homeless, which is 16% more than last year, writes Fox News.

Residents of Los Angeles are disappointed with Mayor Eric Garsetti and argue that his inaction and unsuccessful leadership led to the fact that people have to live on the street, as in the third world countries.

“Eric Garcetti, it's time for you to admit your failure and resign,” Alexandria Datig of Leading Recall Effort said at City Hall. “We demand that you resign before the people of Los Angeles recall you.”

Garsetti held his own press conference at which he spoke about new plans for placing sanitary groups in the city to clean the streets and solve the problem of the homeless. He acknowledged that the city should do more to combat homelessness.

“Homelessness is an emergency in our city. This is a crisis unlike anything we've seen before,” Garcetti said.

Non-profit organizations and enterprises are also working on solving the problem of homelessness. For example, Google recently announced that it is investing 1 billion, to lower the cost of housing in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Founder and CEO of Salesforce, Mark Benioff, was also a leading supporter of tax measures for the homeless in order to resolve the San Francisco crisis. In November, the Proposition C initiative was adopted by 2018, which imposes corporate tax on enterprises with incomes over 50 million US dollars to finance urban facilities and services.

Some organizations are trying to find solutions to the problem on their own, for example, by converting old hotels into housing for the poor and shelters for the homeless. However, such transformations are not fast enough and widespread to have a noticeable effect on reducing the number of homeless people.

One of the groups most affected by the growth of homelessness in the city is people between the ages of 18 and 24, the number of homeless among them has increased by 24% over the past year. "Chronic homeless" - people with mental or physical disabilities who have been homeless for more than a year - have increased by 17% over the year.

This problem is not only Los Angeles. Orange County in California faced an increase in 42% homelessness over the year. In the neighboring Alameda district, the number of homeless people increased by 43%; in Kern County - by 50%. And the homeless population of San Francisco grew by 17%.
