San Francisco Homeless Beats Records

In three districts of San Francisco, California, over two years the number of homeless people has increased by tens of percent, including 17% in San Francisco and 43% in the district that includes Oakland. This is evidenced by the data of the federal authorities, writes New York Post.

During a raid in the Santa Clara counties in San Francisco, Alameda, and Silicon Valley, 25 000 people were identified as homeless. Publication of the full report is planned by the end of the year.

“Initial results show that more needs to be done to provide shelters for the homeless and prevent people from becoming homeless,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

The San Francisco Bay Area faces a crisis of homelessness due in part to inadequate housing and the rapid development of a technological economy that increases inequality in society.

In San Francisco, the average cost of a two-bedroom home is 1,3 million dollars, and a family of four earning 117 400 dollars a year is considered low-income.

“We have an affordable housing crisis across California,” said Jen Loving, executive director of the nonprofit Destination: Home in Santa Clara County, where homelessness has risen 31%.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development requires homelessness calculations every two years. Los Angeles is expected to release its 31 data in May.

The Gulf region has suffered from the problem of homelessness for years, and the authorities all the time promise to take measures to eliminate it. California Governor Gavin Newsom offered to provide cities and counties with up to 650 millions of dollars to build and expand shelters for the homeless. He also offers 10 millions of dollars to help state colleges and universities place homeless students, and 20 millions of dollars for legal assistance to people who are facing eviction.
