Eruption of a volcano in Hawaii is intensifying, blocking the path to evacuation
The eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii is intensifying, blocking the paths to evacuate the people remaining in the eruption zone.
In addition, there was the first victim of this natural phenomenon. A man standing on the balcony of the third floor, received a serious leg injury from splashing lava, reports Voice of America.
“Lava hit him on the shin, and the leg from this place is damaged down,” said Janet Snyder, a spokeswoman for the mayor of Hawaii County.
Information about the status of the victim at the moment no.
According to rescuers, lava rocks that are molten rock, which erupts from more than 20 volcanic cracks in the ground, can be very heavy, and even small pieces can be deadly.
Two streams of lava from the volcano descended into the ocean, as a result of which there was an emission into the atmosphere of hydrochloric acid and steam mixed with the smallest particles of glass. Inhalation of this mixture may cause lung damage, eye and skin irritation.
One of the lava flows blocked the highway, which local residents use for evacuation, significantly complicating the process of leaving the danger zone.
The National Guard of Hawaii has issued a warning about mandatory evacuation, in case there are new road blockages. Magma has already destroyed more than 40 houses.
After the appearance of the first volcanic crevice, lava, as a rule, was sprayed for a short distance and collected at the edges of cracks on the ground. But recently, magma has been ejected from cracks with greater force and for a greater distance, which indicates that the volcano is gaining strength.
Scientists suggest that a major eruption will not lead to human casualties, because most of the settlements that may suffer from it have already been evacuated, more than 2 thousand people have left their homes. In addition, the southeastern part of the island, where the volcano is located, is sparsely populated.
Most of the Big Island and the rest of the island’s state range have not been affected by volcanic activity. Authorities report that air travel with the Big Island and other islands of the state continues as usual.
However, the county authorities are calling on local residents to prepare for a possible evacuation, as scientists believe that volcanic activity at this level may be a precursor to a major eruption, similar to what shook the island in the middle of the 1920-s.
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been in a state of constant eruption over the past 35 years, taking short breaks. Its last major eruption was in the 2014 year, in the 2017 year, the volcano was also active, but it ended in insignificant outcrops of lava.
Signs of an approaching eruption this year began to produce a volcano in late April, causing small earthquakes on the island. The immediate lava flow began on May 4, marked by the 6,9 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful on the island since 1975.
