Contrary to what many people believe, there are more than a thousand volcanoes on Earth. No one knows their exact number, although the Smithsonian Institution catalog lists 1532 volcanoes—this data is considered to be the most reliable today. The problem of counting volcanoes is associated with the difference in their types, as well as with little knowledge of the bottom of the world's oceans, where many as yet undiscovered peaks may be hidden. There is an opinion that about 75% of all volcanoes on the planet are located on the ocean floor, that is, their total number can reach six thousand.

In recent decades, seismic activity and the level of land deformation have increased in the world. On the entire planet every week, 2017 erupted from 14 to 27 volcanoes, writes Gismeteo.

The most volcanic activity was observed in the Pacific Ring of Fire - areas around the Pacific Ocean where several tectonic plates meet.

Eruptions also occur on volcanoes in the interior of the continent, for example, Ol-Doinho-Lengai in Tanzania, or on oceanic islands, for example, in Hawaii.

The most active underwater volcanoes are located on the island chain Tonga-Kermadek in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean.

The eruptions known in modern history cannot be compared with the largest in the history of the Earth. However, frequent small to moderate explosions pose a constant volcanic threat. Around the world today, about 800 million people live within a 100 km radius, and 29 million live within a 10 km radius of active volcanoes.

In 2018, the volcanic threat is highest in Indonesia (the country has 139 active volcanoes, 18 of which are now on high alert), followed by the Philippines, Japan, Mexico and Ethiopia.

Kirishima, Japan

One of the least known, but the most active volcanoes in Japan, Kirishima, is a group of several volcanic cones whose eruptions are recorded since 742. The eruption on one of the Simmoe cones in 2011 was the largest on Kirisima in more than 50 years. Simmoe exploded for the first time in 6 years in October, throwing white smoke streams of 200 km over the crater. Now the level of alarm on the volcano remains elevated.

Merapi, Indonesia

Merapi is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia due to its frequent eruptions and densely populated slopes. The most deadly in the 21st century was the eruption of Merapi in 2010. Then almost 400 people died.

Erivajökull, Iceland

This snow-covered volcano has exploded twice since the beginning of Iceland’s settlement, including the largest explosive eruption in the country in 1362 and another in 1727 – 1728. In both cases, the eruptions were followed by huge and deadly floods, when melted water rushed from the subglacial lakes.

Now Erayvayekyudl seems to be waking up. A slight seismic tremor inside the volcano has been recorded since August 2017. In November, there was a failure inside the main crater - this phenomenon usually becomes a result of the melting of ice below the surface due to the accumulated heat.

Popocatepetl, Mexico

“Steaming Mountain” is located in 70 km southeast of Mexico City, and is the country's most active volcano. The volcano is now erupting - and has been doing it all the time since 2005. A pop-up lava dome grows on Popocatepetl, explosions are heard, ash streams soar up to a height of several kilometers and weak ash falls.

Villarrica, Chile

The snow-covered Villarrica volcano is one of several volcanoes around the world that has an active lava lake. The gradual increase in seismic activity and activity of the lava lake, which produces lava fountains up to 150 meters in height, has been documented since mid-November 2017.

Kilauea, United States

Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island in Hawaii spits basaltic lava 35 continuously for years, and there is no reason to expect that the eruption will end soon. The volcano continues to erupt, and lava flows from the crater, which periodically falls into the ocean.
