Musk announced this on Tuesday, September 22, at the Battery Day event.

Opening the event, which was watched by more than 270 thousand viewers online, Musk took the stage to the cheers of 240 Tesla Model 3 cars, each of which was a shareholder of the company.

According to the statement of the head of the company, the new cylindrical element will be able to store five times more energy, will be six times more powerful than the previous one, and will increase the mileage by 16%.

“We don't have an affordable machine yet, but we will get one in the future. However, this requires reducing the cost of the battery,” said Elon Musk. According to his idea, a new car should cost around 25 thousand dollars.

To achieve this, Musk plans to recycle batteries at his “gigafactory” in Nevada and reduce the use of cobalt, one of the most expensive materials used in such batteries, to almost zero.

Musk is now buying batteries from Panasonic and LG Chem, but back in April last year he admitted that Panasonic was having problems with purchasing batteries for Model 3.

And while Tesla has no plans to abandon outsourcing, Musk wants to start producing its own batteries at its automated factories around the world.

At the same time, during the speech, the head of the company admitted that the process of such production has not yet been developed, and there is no design for its own battery yet.

Investors weren't impressed

In terms of asset value, Tesla came out on top in the world, overtaking Toyota: this was largely due to the growth in the value of the company's shares over the past four quarters.

However, Musk’s latest promises didn’t inspire much enthusiasm among investors, and the stock price went down, so that Tesla lost 50 billion of its value at once.

Musk continues to accuse that many of the technological advances and breakthroughs, which he is always in a hurry to announce, are in fact somewhat exaggerated.

So, at the beginning of the month, consumer protection organization Consumer Reports published a devastating report on cars with automatic control, which says that the indicated capabilities of the autopilot are not yet true.

Musk's announcement that Tesla will become a fully autonomous vehicle by the end of the year in early July was also met with great skepticism.

However, Musk continues to make loud statements: he has already promised that in a month or so there will be a beta version of the software for full autopilot.

How much longer to wait

As automakers switch from horsepower to kilowatt-hours to meet tough new environmental standards, investors need strong evidence that Tesla can maintain its lead in electric car manufacturing without losing ground to traditional players in the auto market.

But while the prices of electric vehicles have dropped significantly thanks to new technologies, they are still significantly more expensive than cars with internal combustion engines, since the cost of a battery is between a quarter and a third of the cost of the entire car.

Some experts estimate that parity will be achieved when each kilowatt-hour of battery costs no more than $ 100.

Last year, Tesla batteries cost $ 156 per kilowatt hour, according to consulting firm Cairn Energy Research Advisors. That is, each set of 90 kWh batteries cost about $ 14.
