FSB detained Ukrainian consul in St. Petersburg: Kiev is outraged

The FSB reported that the Ukrainian consul was detained in Russia while receiving confidential information during a meeting with a Russian. Writes about it with the BBC.

“On April 16, 2021, in the city of St. Petersburg, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, during a meeting with a Russian citizen while receiving classified information contained in the databases of law enforcement agencies and the FSB of Russia, detained red-handed a Ukrainian diplomat - consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine in the city of St. -Petersburg, Alexander Sosonyuk,” the Russian FSB said in a statement.

The department said that the detainee was engaged in what is considered hostile to Russia activities incompatible with the status of a diplomatic worker.

“Measures will be taken against the foreign diplomat in accordance with international law,” we read further in the message.

Ukraine stated that it regards this attitude towards the consul as hostile actions on the part of Russia. Official Kiev is preparing retaliatory measures against Russian diplomats, said the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIL) of Ukraine Yevgeniy Yenin.

“In the near future we will decide on his return home. Our diplomat had nothing to do with the actions that Russian law enforcement officers accuse him of,” Yenin said.

“Another provocation against the backdrop of Russia’s destabilizing actions. Russian law enforcement officers detained an employee of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg for several hours. Now he is in the Ukrainian embassy. The circumstances of the arrest are being clarified. In accordance with existing practice and based on the principle of reciprocity, the Ukrainian side is preparing a response,” said Oleg Nikolenko, press secretary of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

The source said that the head of the consulate and other Ukrainian diplomats are on the spot. According to him, according to similar situations and diplomatic practice, Russia should declare Sosonyuk persona non grata.

According to international standards, diplomats have immunity in the country where they work, but they can be deprived of the right to stay in the event of a violation of the law or hostile actions.

Who is Alexander Sosonyuk

Sosonyuk has been working in Russia for many years. According to the website of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg, he has been in the country since October 2012.

As follows from his income statement, Sosonyuk's salary in 2020 amounted to UAH 173 thousand ($ 6 thousand), he received UAH 1,4 million as compensation payments ($ 50 thousand). His wife Svetlana earned UAH 254 ($ 9). The declaration states that the diplomat owns monetary assets in the amount of $ 170 thousand.

In Russia, Sosonyuk lived in a rented apartment. He and his family own apartments in Kiev and Rivne, as well as two cars.
