Florida has banned asking people for vaccination status: now it has problems with cruise lines

The CEO of a major cruise line has expressed concern about a new law in Florida that prohibits companies from asking if employees and customers have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Writes about it NY Daily News.

“In Florida, your personal choice to get vaccinated will be protected, and no business or entity will be able to deny you services based on your decision,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

The law also prohibits requiring any vaccination passports.

Frank Del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), acknowledged that while Florida is the world's cruise capital, the new law could be a problem. He noted that he did not know exactly when the ships will sail again, but NCLH intends to require that the entire crew and passengers be vaccinated so that they can board.

“This is a very lucrative market. This is a nearby market. But he's problematic. We can't ignore this. We want to resume cruises and make them as safe as possible,” Del Rio said.

The industry has been operating in a conditional shipping environment since October 2020, and cruise operators have been awaiting further guidance ever since. On Wednesday, May 5, the government department issued the final technical instructions announcing two new stages and said the companies now have all the necessary requirements to resume operations.

Del Rio said it probably won't be able to resume cruises until July, given the wide range of standards that need to be met first.

“I seriously doubt we will be able to get the ship out of port in July,” Del Rio said. “August is also in question, all due to inconsistent CDC guidelines.”
