The European Parliament recommends granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate and giving Kyiv more weapons

This is stated in the resolution of the European Parliament on the external security and defense policy of the EU in connection with Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, adopted at the plenary session in Strasbourg on June 8. 438 MEPs voted for it, 65 voted against and 94 abstained.

The European Parliament recommended that the EU Council agree that "the Versailles Declaration recognizes Ukraine's European aspirations and its application for EU membership, and grants it EU candidate status as a clear political signal of solidarity with the people of Ukraine."

Earlier, the European Parliament only called on the EU to "work towards granting Ukraine candidate status."

The current resolution also mentions "the European aspirations of Moldova and Georgia." These countries, as you know, after Ukraine filed their applications. However, the resolution does not contain recommendations to grant them the status of a candidate.

The European Parliament asks for weapons for Ukraine

In addition, the European Parliament recommended "immediately provide weapons in accordance with the needs expressed by the Ukrainian authorities, in particular using the European peace support instrument and the focal point, as well as through bilateral agreements between the EU states and Ukraine." The European Union has already allocated two billion euros ($2,1 billion) to buy weapons for Ukraine.

The resolution, among other things, calls for confirmation that "Ukraine, like any other country, has the sovereign right to independently make decisions on its political alliances and economic integration, without interference from other countries."

MEPs recommended to support the "investigation of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, including a call for a special UN tribunal."

According to the European Parliament, the EU should introduce secondary sanctions against organizations and third countries that help Russia circumvent sanctions. The resolution, among other things, calls for a detailed study of the impact of restrictive measures on Russia.

“The goal is to help Ukraine defeat the Russian Federation”

Among the most controversial were several paragraphs of the resolution relating to Russia. They were submitted by representatives of the Social Democrat faction.

“The strategic goal of the free world is to help Ukraine finally defeat the Russian aggressor and regain control over its internationally recognized territory,” the resolution says. The Social Democrats wanted to avoid mentioning the defeat of Russia, and their amendment spoke of undermining the ability of the Russian Federation "to threaten the territorial integrity of neighboring countries and undermine international security in the future." However, this amendment was not supported.

The original text of the resolution was also preserved, which noted that the lack of an “adequate” response to “Russian aggression against Georgia in 2008 and against Ukraine in 2014 prompted Russia to continue aggressive military and political campaigns, including a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”

The Social Democrats managed to replace the paragraph of the project, emphasizing that Vladimir Putin during his presidency turned Russia into a totalitarian pariah state (Pariah is one of the untouchable castes in Tamil Nadu, in southern India. "," disenfranchised). 229 MEPs voted to leave the text of this paragraph unchanged. But 330 of their colleagues replaced it with this: “Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and its attacks on the European peace order are taking place against the backdrop of a brutal repression of civil society and political opposition in Russia aimed at ensuring the survival of an increasingly totalitarian regime.”

This is the second time since the start of the war that an attempt to call Russia a "pariah state" did not find support in the European Parliament.
