New Jersey man hits $1,3 billion Mega Millions jackpot

A Mega Millions lottery winner from New Jersey won a $1,13 billion jackpot in the March 26 drawing. The lucky man bought the ticket that changed his life at a liquor store in Monmouth County, reports New York Post.

ShopRite Liquor, located on Route 66 in Neptune Township, was awarded a $30 bonus check for selling the winning ticket.

“This is incredibly exciting,” Richard Saker, president of the company that operates the Neptune Township ShopRite, said March 27. He noted that the raffle money will be donated to ShopRite's Partners in Caring program, which supports 2200 charities fighting hunger.

There was no information about the identity of the new billionaire who bought the lottery ticket.

The ticket was sold by the niece of Neptune Township Mayor Tiyan Bambaata, who works part-time at a ShopRite store. But she said the identity of the winner remains a mystery to her too.

“Last night several people came and went. I can’t remember who it was,” Tiyana noted.

She is glad that it could be one of the local residents.

“I’m glad someone from my hometown won,” the saleswoman admitted.

Under New Jersey law, lottery winners are allowed to remain anonymous and prizes can be claimed up to a year after the drawing.

“We don't know who the winner is. “We know where and when the ticket was sold, but we don’t know who bought it,” said James Carey, executive director of the New Jersey Lottery. “If you are a winner, I advise you to sign the back of the ticket right now, take a photo of it, make a copy and put it in a safe place.”

“Just tell those closest to you that you are this lucky winner. “I would encourage you to talk to a lawyer and perhaps a financial advisor,” he added. — Talk to some professional about what to do with your wealth. No one has the experience of becoming rich overnight.”

The first jackpot of 2024 hit on the evening of March 26 after 30 straight weeks without a Mega Millions winner. This is the eighth largest prize in US lottery history.

The winning numbers were 7, 11, 22, 29, 38 and Mega ball 4.

The newly minted billionaire could receive $1,13 billion in annual payments over 30 years or a lump sum payment of $537,5 million.
