Four humpback whales fight for food endangers tourists in California

Whale watchers were amazed as four huge humpback whales feasted on the fish hiding under their boat. The giant creatures surpassed the size of the observers' craft. More details about what happened were told by the publication Dailymail.

Participants in the spectacular observation trip, which took place in Monterey Bay, California, saw four humpback whales, joined by sea lions and gulls as they hunted for anchovies hiding under their boat.

Photographer Jodie Frediani was there to capture the action and said the whales came pretty close to the boat.

She said: “The whales, sea lions and birds had a feast. We were lucky enough to see four humpback whales lunging at the surface, one of the most exciting things you can watch.”

Lunge feeding is when whales consume large amounts of prey and water after propelling themselves forward with great force. They then use a filtration system that acts like a giant sieve and allows them to get rid of excess water.

Jodie explained: “Sometimes anchovies hide under boats trying to escape the giant jaws of feeding whales. Occasionally they are lucky, at least for a short time. But whales are experts at their craft, and sooner or later the fish will become lunch or dinner.”

While this helps protect most of them from diving birds and sea lions, such aggregations are exactly what humpback whales are looking for. The denser the fish, the more food there is for the whales.

“Seagulls usually wait for stunned fish, which will then rise to the surface. Overall, it was a great day for everyone except the fish,” said the photographer.

Humpback whales are the most common whale sighted in Monterey Bay between April and November, according to the Santa Cruz Whale Watching Service.

There are several hundred humpback whales known to spend the winter off the coast of Mexico before migrating to central California for feeding.
