Airlines introduce security interviews for travelers to the US

Travelers heading to the United States may face a longer check-in process when boarding an aircraft since October 26, as from this day new security requirements will apply when entering the United States.

The new checks are part of the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to examine electronic devices carried on board aircraft, writes USA Today.

On the eve of this period, at least four major air carriers stated that they had already begun to conduct new “safety interviews” with all passengers on flights bound for the United States. According to representatives of these airlines, the interviews were entered at the request of the American side, so other carriers are likely to be asked to do the same.

Among these airlines Emirates (UAE) stated that passengers flying to the United States on its flights are now required to pass a "preliminary interview" near the registration desk. This rule also applies to passengers who, on their way to the United States, have a transfer in Dubai. In this regard, the airline advised customers to plan additional time for check-in and boarding.

“These measures will be in addition to the current additional passenger screening measures carried out at boarding,” the statement said. Emirates.

German airline Lufthansa, which has one of the largest passenger traffic in the US among European airlines, announced the introduction of similar measures.

“In addition to the electronic device controls already in place, travelers to the United States may now also face short interviews at check-in, document screening, or at the gate before boarding,” the statement said. Lufthansa.

Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong introduced similar measures, adding that passengers flying without baggage may face an interview at the boarding gates.

Egyptian air carrier EgyptAir also introduced interviews for passengers traveling to the USA.

Other airlines are expected to introduce similar October 26 measures.

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced additional measures to check electronics before boarding an 28 June aircraft. This was done in order to more effectively detect explosives that can be hidden in electronics.

These measures apply to 180 airlines flying to the United States from 280 airports to 105 countries.

Prior to this, in March 2017, the United States imposed a ban on the transportation of computers and other major electronics in hand luggage from some airports in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa. In July, this ban was replaced by increased security measures and additional checks on computers.
