US residents warned of dangerous black licorice candy

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns of possible health problems due to eating black liquorice sweets.

FDA experts say that black liquorice contains a compound glycyrrhizin, which is a sweetener derived from licorice root. Glycyrrhizin can lead to a drop in the level of potassium in the body. When this happens, some people have abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure, swelling, lethargy, and congestive heart failure.

Linda Katz, MD, says the agency received a report last year that a black licorice fan had a health problem after drinking too much.

Several medical journals have linked the use of black liquorice with health problems in people older than 40. Some of them had heart problems or high blood pressure.

Katz says that the level of potassium is usually restored when the consumption of black licorice is stopped.

If you like black liquorice, the FDA suggests the following:

• Regardless of your age, do not eat large amounts of black liquorice at a time.
• If you have eaten a lot of black liquorice and feel muscle weakness or heart rhythm problems, stop eating it and consult a doctor.
• Black liquorice may interact with certain medications, herbs, and dietary supplements. Consult your doctor if you have questions about possible interactions with the drug or supplement you are taking.
