Parents are warned that children can be treated to Halloween marijuana candies

Parents are warned to keep track of what sweets their children get during Halloween, as some people slip candy with marijuana.

This is stated in the message of the General Prosecutor's Office of the State of New Jersey, which contains a warning about the "significant presence of candy and other edible forms of marijuana in New Jersey and nearby states," writes NBC.

The warning cites a case of an 10-year-old boy from New York who, according to police, fell ill after eating a cannabis candy found in the back seat of his father’s car. Although this case had nothing to do with Halloween.

Supporters of marijuana legalization in New Jersey say that marijuana candies seem to have become the new "blades in apples." This is the myth of New Jersey, which for several years on the eve of Halloween was distributed by police in several states, despite the absence of any known cases of detection of blades in apples.

At the same time, Sharon Lauher, a spokesman for the state attorney general, said that in the state and in other regions of the United States "several cases" of children's diseases were recorded after eating edible marijuana. However, she refused to give examples of specific cases and evidence that someone gives out marijuana candies to children during Halloween.

“Our job is to try to prevent accidents whenever possible, and given the striking similarities between these edible drugs and regular candy, it was necessary to warn parents. We want our kids to have a safe and happy Halloween,” she said.

Marijuana sweets come in the form of jelly bears, they can also be similar to fruit flavored caramel or chocolate bars.

Al Della Fave, a spokeswoman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, who also shared a warning, acknowledges that the likelihood that someone will deliberately give a child marijuana candy during Halloween is “very low.”

“But you never know. All we suggest doing is checking your kids' candy. If something is not in the manufacturer's wrapper, it's best to throw it away,” she said.

Supporters of the legalization of marijuana see this as another argument in their favor: if you legalize cannabis, you can regulate the packaging of its edible forms, prohibiting to indicate the name “candy” on it, as it did in Colorado.

Recall that in New Jersey medical marijuana is already legalized, the legalization of recreational marijuana is the subject of discussions in the region.
