An armed man opened fire in the center of Paris: 3 people were killed

In the center of Paris, an armed man opened fire, killing three people and injuring four others. Writes about it with the BBC.

Witnesses said the perpetrator attacked a Kurdish community center and restaurant, and prosecutors said they were investigating a possible racist motive.

The 69-year-old suspect was quickly arrested and it was soon revealed that he had recently been released from prison. Police launched investigations into murder, attempted murder, assault and violation of France's firearms laws.

Authorities have urged people to avoid the Strasbourg-Saint-Denis area in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

There is no confirmed motive for the shooting, but Paris prosecutor Laure Becco said the suspect was recently released from custody, a year after he attacked tents at a migrant camp in Paris with a sword. This incident took place in Bercy on 8 December 2021. It is not clear why he was released.

Local mayor Alexandra Cordebard said a suspect was also injured in the shooting and that three locations were hit: a Kurdish community center, a restaurant and a hairdresser. Two people were shot dead in the cabin.

“We were walking down the street and heard shots,” said Ali Dalek. We turned around and saw that people were running left and right. And then, after about five or six minutes, we saw that they had arrested a man - an elderly, tall man.

Another witness, a shop owner, locked herself in the house.

She assured that she heard seven or eight bursts. Two of those injured in the shooting are said to be in critical condition, with two others seriously injured.

Police detained the suspect without resistance and reportedly seized the weapon used in the attack. The prosecutor's office said they opened a criminal case on the murder. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo praised the police for their decisive action.

The attack comes almost 10 years after the murder of three Kurdish women in Paris in January 2013.

The street near Château d'Eau metro station has several restaurants and shops, as well as a cultural centre. Alexandra Cordebard said it was a very lively area.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said he was on his way to Paris to visit the site of the "dramatic shooting". His thoughts, the official noted, are with the friends and family of the victims.
