'Behaved unethical': a passenger went to jail for spoiling the air in a taxi

The man was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly gasping in an Uber taxi and attacking a driver for protesting his behavior. New York Post.

“He behaved indecently that evening,” barrister Anthony Bignall told Bristol Crown Court of his client’s behaviour.

In a bizarre incident last year, James Mallett, 35, from Kingswood, reportedly took indecent liberties in the back seat of a taxi with three other passengers on his way to a nightclub. It was the “last straw” for the Uber driver, a Bulgarian named Alexander Bonchev, who was brutalized by passengers, according to court testimony.

Prosecutor James Scutt said Bonchev asked Mallett to “get out of the car”, after which he told the whole group to calm the driver down and hit him in the head. Bonchev reportedly responded by punching Mallett in the face and knocking him to the ground.

At that point, a young girl who was with Mallett reportedly persuaded him to leave. Some time later, the police came across this wayward passenger - he, according to Scutt, had a “cut on his lower lip” and was “simply intoxicated.”

Scutt told the court Mallett was abusive to police officers. Bignale responded that his client was described as “polite, helpful” and knows how to behave.

On November 30 last year, the man confessed to the assault, which resulted in real damage, after which he was sentenced to six months in prison, a $ 650 fine and 120 hours of community service. Since then, his prison sentence has been suspended for 18 months.

The driver was unable to work due to a broken finger during a fight, but Bonchev's test did not end there. He lost his job, his car, even his house and returned to his homeland, to Bulgaria.
