In South Carolina, a train carrying 140 passengers collided with a freight train: more than 70 affected
Amtrak passenger train collided with a CSX freight train in South Carolina. According to local authorities, on Sunday morning, two people were killed and more than 70 injured, writes USA Today.
The crash occurred at 2:35 a.m. in Case, South Carolina, according to Derrek Becker with the South Carolina Office of Emergency Management. There were about 140 passengers on the train, Becker said. All passengers were evacuated. Lexington County spokesman Harrison Cahill added that passengers suffered injuries ranging from scratches to broken bones.
Difficulties were added by the weather conditions, because at the time of the crash the temperature outside was minus one degree Celsius.
In a statement Amtrak it is said that the leading train locomotive Amtrak and some passenger cars derailed.

Becker said that around 5 000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled out, but according to him, there was no threat to people.
The Red Cross quickly responded to the fact that the train crashed, which created a shelter in the nearby Pine Ridge High School to help the victims.
Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said a team of investigators had been sent to the crash area. According to him, today will be held a press conference.
This accident was the second major incident with Amtrak in less than a week. Recall that on Wednesday, January 31, a train carrying Republican members of Congress encountered a garbage truck in Virginia. As a result of the crash, one person died, many were injured.
In December, the passenger train went off the rails on a flyover near Seattle, and the cars fell onto the highway under the bridge, taking the lives of three people.
In 2015, the train Amtrak derailed in Philadelphia. Then 8 people died and more than 200 were injured.
