How to survive in case of emergency in a high-rise building
American cities have a large number of skyscrapers, which are very convenient and beautiful, but quite dangerous in case of an emergency.
In order not to get lost and save the life of yourself and your family, the project Ready.gov collected tips on how to behave properly during an emergency in a high-rise building.
Explosion
- Take cover behind your desk or massive desk.
- Leave the building as soon as possible.
- Do not use elevators.
- Believe if there is a fire or other danger.
- If time permits, take a set of essential items with you.
Fire
- Leave the building as soon as possible.
- In the presence of smoke, crawl, dropping to all fours.
- If possible, use a wet piece of cloth to cover your nose and mouth.
- Use the back of your hand to touch the top, bottom, and middle of closed doors. If the door is not hot, lean on it and open it slowly. If the door is hot, don't open it - find another way out.
- Do not use elevators.
- If you are affected by fire, do not run. Fall and roll on the ground to bring down the fire.
- If you are at home, go to a pre-arranged meeting place.
- Keep in sight the members of your family and carefully look after young children.
- In no case do not return to the burning building.
Earthquake
- Pay attention to where the nearest emergency exit is located.
- You should also know another way out of the building in case the first one is blocked.
- If things fall, take cover under the table.
- Move away from the filing cabinets, bookshelves and other things that may fall.
- Turn away from windows and glass objects.
- Move away from the outer walls.
- Determine whether you should stay, create a shelter or leave.
- Listen to the instructions and follow them.
- Do not use elevators.
- Go down the stairs and keep to the right so that the rescuers can climb.
If you are overwhelmed
- If possible, signal to rescuers about their whereabouts with a flashlight.
- Avoid unnecessary movements, so as not to raise dust.
- Cover your nose and mouth with any material that is at hand. (Thick cotton fabric can serve as a good filter, try to breathe through the fabric).
- Knock on pipes or walls so that rescuers can hear where you are.
- If possible, signal to rescuers with a whistle.
- Shout only as a last resort: during a shout, a person inhales a dangerous amount of dust.
