In Ukraine, they want to deprive citizenship of persons with dual citizenship

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko submitted to the Verkhovna Rada as an urgent bill providing for the deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship of those who have dual citizenship.

“The bill concerns solving the issue of dual citizenship. This law will establish that a person who has voluntarily acquired citizenship of a foreign state will be considered one who falls under the requirement to terminate Ukrainian citizenship,” said the presidential representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Artur Gerasimov, at a briefing on Monday, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

He added that these changes in the law of Ukraine will clarify the basis for the loss of Ukrainian citizenship. According to him, such a basis would be the voluntary acquisition of citizenship of another country by a citizen of Ukraine, as well as if a person does not renounce foreign citizenship within a certain period of time from the receipt of Ukrainian.

According to the provisions of Art. 4 Constitution of Ukraine, in Ukraine, only one citizenship. However, the legislation does not provide for penalties for having passports of other countries.

American Ukrainians are outraged

Public association of Ukrainians in the USA Razom for Ukraine published on Facebook an appeal to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko with a call to withdraw the bill he submitted. Reports about it VIDIA .

According to preliminary estimates of the union, the bill number 6175 from 13.03.2017 on amending the Law of Ukraine "On Citizenship of Ukraine" can lead to "automatic deprivation of citizenship about 5 million Ukrainians."

“Foreign Ukrainians have always played a significant role in the statehood of Ukraine, preserving the legal and cultural traditions of Ukraine in exile during periods of occupation, defending the interests of Ukrainians in the international arena, financially and resourcefully helping the young state, providing comprehensive support during the Revolution of Dignity and after it,” - reminiscent of Ukrainians from the USA.

“We consider the President’s initiative to limit the rights of foreign Ukrainians to be ill-considered, and also one that will lead to negative consequences for Ukraine due to the loss of significant support from Ukrainians in other states, which today act as an outpost for lobbying the interests of Ukraine. During the period of occupation of part of the territory of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, as well as military conflicts in the eastern regions, we consider such actions of the President criminal and anti-state,” says a statement published on Facebook.

Activists Razom for Ukraine urged the President to withdraw this bill, and the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada in no case support the changes to the Law on Citizenship in the form presented.
