10 steps to naturalization: the process of obtaining US citizenship

Obtaining US citizenship gives permanent residents new rights and benefits. For To apply for naturalization, you must complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

General steps in the naturalization process

1 step. Determine if you are already a US citizen

What to do: If you are not a U.S. citizen from birth or have not acquired or received U.S. citizenship from your parent (s) automatically after birth, continue to the next step.

Step 2. Determine if you qualify to become a U.S. citizen

What to do: Read conditions, to help you determine if you are eligible to apply for naturalization.

3 step. Prepare Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

What to do: download form and read the instructions. Prepare passport type 2 photographs and collect the necessary documents to demonstrate your citizenship rights. Use document checklist, to make sure that you collect all the necessary documents.

4 step. Submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

After you submit your N-400 form, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will send you a receipt. You can check the status of your application on the website or call the National Customer Service Center by phone: 1-800-375-5283 or 1-800-767-1833 (for people with hearing impairments).

5 step. Go to the appointment of biometrics

What to do: If you need to submit biometric data, USCIS will send a notification with the appointment of a date, time and place. Come to a clearly appointed time and place for the submission of biometric data.

6 step. Ending interview

If the naturalization ceremony is unavailable on this day, USCIS will send you a notification by mail with the date, time and place of the planned ceremony.

9 step. Take the oath of allegiance to the United States

You are not a US citizen until you have taken the oath of allegiance at the naturalization ceremony.

What to do: Fill out the application form N-445. A USCIS officer will review your answers on the N-445 Form. Enter your permanent resident card (Green Card). Take the oath of allegiance to become a US citizen. After receiving a certificate of naturalization, check it and notify USCIS of any errors that you find on your certificate before leaving the venue.
