Russian transport plane crashed in Syria: all died

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Russian An-26 transport plane crashed while landing at Khmeimim, killed 32 people. He considers technical problems to be the preliminary cause of the disaster of the Ministry of Defense, writes Air force.

As the department said, the plane did not reach the runway of the Khmeimim airfield by about 500 meters and collided with the ground. The Ministry of Defense, citing a report from the scene of the incident, claims that the An-26 “was not hit by fire” - that is, it was not shot down.

The crash occurred around 15: 00 Moscow time (8: 00 in the morning in New York). On board the aircraft were 26 passengers and 6 crew members.

The ministry will create a commission that examines all possible versions of the disaster. According to preliminary information, the plane could break due to a technical malfunction.

The main military prosecutor's office will also check for compliance with the safety legislation after the crash of the An-26.

According to a Kommersant source close to the Ministry of Defense, the crashed An-26 was part of the 33rd separate transport mixed air regiment (Levashovo airfield) of the 6th Leningrad Red Banner Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Western Military District. This information has not been officially confirmed.

Kommersant wrote in September 2017 that An-26 aircraft operate flights between Khmeimim airfield and Aleppo international airport. On the same An-26, the Ministry of Defense transported journalists along the Khmeimim-Aleppo route on a press tour to Syria.

The Russian military regularly reported on the work of An-26 in the conflict zone in Syria. For example, on January 5, a truck of this type delivered a cargo of Russian humanitarian aid to Damascus from the Hmeimim airbase.

The last major incident with Russian aviation in Syria was 3 February. Then in the province of Idlib was shot down Su-25 attack aircraft of the Russian Air Force.

The pilot who piloted it ejected, but was surrounded by militants and blew himself up with a grenade.

The previous plane crash with a large number of fatalities occurred with the plane of the Russian Ministry of Defense in December 2016 of the year. Then in Sochi crashed Tu-154, which was heading to Syria. There were 92 people on board, including artists from the Alexandrov Song and Dance Ensemble.

In January 2015, in Syria, an An-26 Syrian Air Force carrying military personnel from Damascus crashed while landing at the Abu ad-Duhur airfield (Idlib province). Then, as a result of the disaster, 30 people died - according to official data, it was caused by heavy fog.

The An-26 is a military transport aircraft that is designed to transport military equipment and troops. Currently, the main operators of the An-26 are the Russian armed forces, the Chinese air force and the Ukrainian air force.
