In Russia, they stopped issuing 10-year passports with chips

In different cities of Russia, they temporarily stopped issuing biometric foreign passports valid for 10 years, reports Meduza.

This information was confirmed in the departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Tver and Orenburg regions. The production of foreign passports with chips was suspended on January 20. Without problems, you can get a passport for 5 years and without a chip.

“In connection with the information received from JSC Goznak, the production of a passport containing an electronic storage medium has been tentatively postponed until mid-March 2023 for technical reasons,” the Tver Region police said in a statement quoted by the TIA agency.

The fact that the issuance of biometric passports may be resumed in mid-March was reported to Ural56.ru in the Orsk migration department. At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Chuvashia said that the production of passports was postponed for an "indefinite period."

The Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kamchatka Territory reported that new-generation passports are not issued in two migration departments, while other departments and the MFC continue to accept documents (whether passports are issued in them is not clear from the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs).

“In case of an urgent need to travel outside the Russian Federation,” issue old-style international passports for a period of five years, as recommended by the regional departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to a resident of Moscow, the center of public services "My Documents" in Kryukovo refused to accept his application for a ten-year passport "due to the lack of chips." “Applications for such passports are not accepted until at least March 31, and the next date for obtaining a passport valid for 10 years is in May,” says an employee of the My Documents center.

The press service of the center in Moscow denied this. The organization told TASS that “as usual” they accept applications for issuing biometric passports through crypto-bio-cabins, and employees continue to issue ready-made documents. The center said that since the beginning of the year, more than two thousand international passports issued with the help of a cryptobiocabin have been issued in public service centers.

In August 2022, Russian consulates abroad temporarily stopped accepting documents for biometric passports due to the need to “reformat the electronic media,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “This happens in connection with our technological progress, in connection with the trends of the times, that the system needs to be restarted,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova explained what happened. At the end of September, the issuance of new generation passports was resumed.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, from January to October 2022, almost 4,35 million foreign passports were issued in Russia, which is a third more than in the same period of 2021. This is also more than for the same periods in 2020 and pre-pandemic 2019.
