In Mexico, unidentified men opened fire in the bar: 13 killed, 4 injured

19 April in the city of Minatitlan in the Mexican state of Veracruz, a bar shooting took place, as a result of which 12 adults and one child were killed. The incident was the worst massacre in the country since President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador took office, authorities said.

According to a government spokesman for Veracruz, unknown persons opened fire on Friday evening, 19 April, in a bar in the south-east of the city, writes Reuters. They came there looking for a "man" - he was later identified as the probable owner of the bar.

The attack occurred during a family holiday. As a result of the shooting, seven men, five women and one child died. Four more people were injured.

The shooting took place in a facility near the Minatitlan oil refinery, one of six operated by the state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

The motive for the killing is unclear, the spokeswoman said. It is not yet clear whether the “man” the attackers were looking for was in the bar at that very time.

Hugo Gutierrez, the head of the public security service in the state, tweeted that an operation had been launched to capture the people responsible for the killings.

The oil-rich state of Veracruz has been undergoing upheavals for several years due to banditry and political corruption scandals.

Lopez Obrador took office in December, promising to reduce violence in Mexico, where more than 2006 200 people have been killed since the end of 000: mainly in the fierce wars between drug cartels and their clashes with security forces.

Official government figures show that after reaching a record in 2018, the homicide rate remained high, surpassing last year's data in the first three months of the new government.

According to information published before the attack took place, on April 21 the president was to visit Veracruz. Whether he was there on the appointed day is not specified.
