2 helicopters collided while extinguishing a fire in California: 3 people died

Three people died in Southern California on August 6. This happened as a result of a collision of two helicopters in the air while extinguishing a fire, reports CNN.

There were 6 helicopters in total that responded to the Broadway Fire near Cabazon. The fire began on August 6 in Riverside County, CalFire Southern Region chief David Fulcher said later that evening. It is about 144 km east of Los Angeles.

According to the representative of the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board), Bell 407 and Sikorsky S-64E helicopters collided in the air.

“The first helicopter was able to land safely nearby,” Fulcher said during a news conference. “Unfortunately, the second helicopter crashed and three people tragically lost their lives.”

According to CalFire, the dead (and this is a contract pilot, the head of the CalFire division and the captain of the CalFire) were the first victims of the 2023 fires in California.

When firefighters arrived at the scene (around 18:00 pm), the Broadway Fire covered about 1,2 hectares. But after 19:00, the "direct propagation speed" was stopped.

A second 1,6-hectare fire, caused by a helicopter crash, has also been extinguished, according to CalFire's Southern Region chief.

“I would like to express our deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased personnel,” Fulcher said. “This is a tragic loss for our community, for CalFire Fire and Rescue, and for all of Riverside County.”
