Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau files for divorce after 18 years of marriage

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are separating after 18 years of marriage. They made this decision after an “important but difficult conversation,” reports with the BBC.

In a message the couple posted on Instagram, they said they would remain a "close family with deep love and respect."

Trudeau's office said in a statement that while the couple have signed a divorce agreement, they will still make public appearances together.

“We remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for all that we have built and will continue to build,” said Justin Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Gregoire, 48.

They also asked for privacy for the "well-being" of their children.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, a former entertainment journalist, was a classmate of Trudeau's younger brother, Michel. They met again as adults in 2003 when they hosted a charity ball together.

The couple married in Montreal in 2005 and have three children.

They've been less seen together in public lately, though they were at the coronation of King Charles III in May and hosted US President Joe Biden in Canada in March.

In May, the Canadian prime minister posted a wedding anniversary photo of himself and his wife holding hands in a camper van.

“Every mile of this journey together is an adventure,” the photo caption reads. - I love you, Soph. Happy anniversary!"

In an anniversary post last year, Gregoire-Trudeau wrote that they take their boat through "sunny days, big storms and everything in between."

Trudeau has been Prime Minister of Canada for eight years.
