The city of New York is proposed to be made the 51 state of the USA

In the New York debates, a new topic has appeared: whether the state of New York should split into two separate states, one of which will be the city of New York.

A native of the local city of Batavia and Member of State Steve Howley again holds an optional referendum to separate the rest of New York from the city of the same name, writes WNCT.

“Costs are a problem, mandates are a problem, taxes and government philosophy are problems. And I think we are very different, especially in the city and in the western part of the state,” Hawley said.

Hawley believes that if a referendum takes place, this issue will be decided by voters. He wants to put the question on the ballot in the following way: "Should New York split into two states?" Hawley says that research needs to be done to see if this can be done.

“I think that's what we need to ask people. Many of the proposals that New York City is putting forward have nothing in common with the rest of New York State,” he said.

Hawley says he was motivated by the “controversial things” that were adopted in New York State: the recently adopted law on abortions, the law on “dreamers” and gun control.

Democratic MP Shawn Ryan says that the issue is unlikely to come to a vote. According to him, without New York, western New York cannot live.

“Economically, it would be very bad for Western New York. A huge portion of our tax revenue, our income taxes, comes from millionaires living in New York City, and that's going to limit our revenue,” Ryan said.

Hawley says that last week he wrote a letter to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Carl Histy, in search of help to translate the issue into the voting plane. He hopes that this will happen, but says he has not yet received an answer.
