Sanctions against Russian gas pipelines and aid to Ukraine: US Senate approves military budget

The $738 billion budget was approved by a majority of votes: 86 members of the upper house of Congress were in favor of adoption, and 8 were against. The document includes restrictions against participants in the construction of the Russian gas pipelines Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream. Sanctions will help maintain Europe's energy security, the authors are confident.

Gas pipelines should be launched in 2020. With the help of projects, Russia is trying to reduce the dependence of its energy exports on transit through Ukraine. Gazprom expects to complete the construction of both pipelines before the sanctions come into force.

Military assistance included in defense budget in the amount of $ 300 million. This includes, among other things, payment for the supply of lethal weapons to the country. The document separately prohibits the US government from recognizing Crimea as part of the territory of Russia.

A separate measure of containment of Russia in the budget bill is called ban on the transfer of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey after the country's purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems.

In addition, the draft budget includes the introduction of paid maternity leave for all US federal employees. 12-week leave will be granted to all two million one hundred thousand federal employees after the birth or adoption of a child and will manage a budget of $ 3,3 billion over 5 years.
