Germany calls on US not to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas urges the United States not to impose sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream-2 pipeline, writes RBC.

He noted that the German government is trying to persuade Washington to abandon restrictions. “We are negotiating with the Americans,” he said.

Maas called the sanctions against Nord Stream-2 interference in European affairs, according to the German Foreign Ministry website. He stated that European energy policy issues are being addressed in Europe, not in the United States. According to him, Germany “fundamentally rejects” outside interference and sanctions that have extraterritorial consequences.

10 December U.S. Congress laid in the military budget for the 2020 year, sanctions against the Russian pipelines Nord Stream-2 and Turkish Stream. US lawmakers did not have time to develop a separate project on restrictions. The Eastern Committee of the German Economy called these sanctions a threat to the sovereignty of the European Union. The German-Russian Chamber of Commerce also condemned US restrictions and stated that the EU should take retaliatory measures. However, the Speaker of the Alternative for Germany faction, Steffen Kotre, said the German government had “capitulated” to Washington because of an “economic attack” on Nord Stream-2, writes RIA News.

It was planned to launch this pipeline by the end of the 2019 of the year from Russia to Germany, bypassing the transit states - Ukraine, Belarus, Poland. The pipeline capacity is 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The project cost is estimated at almost 10 billion euros.

Construction was delayed due to the position of Denmark. The sole shareholder of Nord Stream-2 is Russian Gazprom. The partners of the monopolist in the project - German Wintershall and Uniper, Austrian OMV, French Engie and Royal Dutch Shell (Great Britain and the Netherlands) - promised to finance 50% of the project.
