Russia warned about the readiness to attack the base with the US military in Syria

According to a number of US officials, last week Russia twice warned the United States that, together with the Syrian units, it was ready to attack those regions where dozens of US troops are stationed.

Russia claims that militants are also located in a zone protected by US troops, writes CNN.

Moscow’s statement sharply reinforced the fears of the American command that US troops would be in serious danger if a Russian attack did take place. And this made the United States warn Moscow in response so that it would not test the fact of the US military presence.

Several US military officials told reporters that the US-based coalition center against ISIS, which is located in Et-Tanfe, where American troops help control the 55-kilometer exclusion zone in the region, is alarming. Given its location near the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, the Al-Tanfa garrison is considered a key strategic point, as the United States, Iran and Russia compete for influence in the region.

Right to self defense

There are fears that the Russians may use airplanes or naval vessels in the eastern Mediterranean to launch a rocket attack on those called militants. This may cause a confrontation that could inadvertently attract US forces if the Russian calculation turns out to be inaccurate. According to officials, at the moment there is no increase in the Russian ground forces in the region.

US officials are not reporting exactly how Moscow conveyed its warnings to Washington. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are updated with the latest intelligence. American troops in this region traditionally have the right to repel a military attack in self-defense, and this will not require permission from the highest echelons of power.

Although the situation is described by one of the US officials as “alarming,” the US’s interest in discussing Moscow’s warning that the Russians have a clear idea of ​​any possible retaliatory actions by the US military is clearly visible.

“We absolutely advised them to stay away from Tanf,” one of the sources said. “We are determined to fight back.”

“The United States does not seek to fight the Syrian government or any groups that can support it. However, in the event of an attack, the United States will not hesitate to use the necessary and proportional force to protect US forces, coalitions or partners, ”a defense official told CNN.

However, US officials are not talking about what weapons and measures can be used to protect American troops. US officials point out that Russia's complaints about the presence of potential al-Qaeda or ISIL in the buffer zone are not new. But due to the attacks by the Russian-backed Syrian regime forces in the Idlib area in the north of the country, there is concern that Moscow may view this period as the optimal time for conducting several offensive operations.
