The Russian Ministry of Defense has released new data on the number of military personnel who took part in the Syrian operation. Compared to the end of last year, their number has increased significantly - from 48 thousand to 63 thousand people. 434 generals alone visited Syria.

After the operation began in September 2015, the Russian military department did not disclose the number of military personnel involved. Journalists had to calculate by indirect indicators - for example, by awards.

In March 2016, the media drew attention to the fact that the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a tender for the purchase of more than 10 thousand medals “For participants in the military operation in Syria.” In February 2017, an order for 20 thousand of these awards was placed on the government procurement website.

In December 2017, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu officially announced for the first time that “more than 48 thousand military personnel of the Russian army received invaluable combat experience in Syria.”

Shoigu spoke about this at the final board of the Ministry of Defense, where he reported to President Vladimir Putin on the implementation of his decision on the withdrawal of the bulk of the Russian troops from Syria.

Putin ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria on December 11 during a visit to the Russian Khmeimim airbase. Now, eight months later, the Ministry of Defense has sharply increased the estimate of the size of the military contingent in the country where civil war has been going on since March 2011.

These and other data were published on the ministry’s official YouTube channel under the title “Military operation of the Russian Armed Forces in the Syrian Arab Republic - results in numbers.”

These numbers are:

• 63 012 Russian military personnel, including 25 738 officers, took part in the operation;
• 434 General participated in the operation in Syria;
• 91% of military crews, 97% of military transport and 60% of strategic aviation of Russia passed through Syria;
• “All commanders of the military districts passed through the group with their headquarters teams,” the Russian Ministry of Defense states;
• during the operation, a 231 specimen was tested;
• aviation made more than 39 thousands of sorties;
• ships and submarines carried out 100 strikes with Caliber cruise missiles;
• Navy forces carried out 189 combat campaigns, in which 86 ships and 14 submarines took part;
• strategic long-range aviation aircraft struck 66 with airborne cruise missiles;
• as a result of the attacks of Russia, as the Russian Defense Ministry claims, more than 86 thousands of militants and their leaders 830 were killed.

“And I don’t think they want to be stuck there. I think their flurry of diplomatic activity in Europe suggests that they would like to find someone else to, for example, bear the costs of rebuilding Syria - which they may or may not succeed in." Bolton said.

“It is incorrect to say that Russia is stuck somewhere, especially on the part of our colleagues from Washington,” Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov later retorted. “Let's not forget that the US military is also on Syrian soil.”

Moscow calls the goal of its participation in the Syrian operation the fight against militants of the Islamic State banned in Russia and other terrorists. The basis for the start of the operation was an appeal from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Western countries accuse Russia of supporting the Assad regime, and Assad himself is accused of killing a huge number of civilians.

Syria as a landfill

In addition, Russia has repeatedly been accused of using Syria as a testing ground for weapons. About this, in particular, said the commander of US ground forces in Europe, Lieutenant-General Ben Hodges.

During a “direct line” in June 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that this was not the case, although he stipulated that the operation in Syria was a “unique combat experience” for the Russian armed forces, which could not be compared “with any exercises.”

“Syria is not a testing ground for Russian weapons. But we still use it there, it’s a Russian weapon. This led to the improvement of modern strike systems, including missile systems,” Putin noted.

And Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Yuri Borisov, telling Gazeta.Ru about the experience of using weapons in Syria, said that “every fact when we are not satisfied with something, when there is a deviation from the declared characteristics or some inconvenience in operation, is taken penciled and analyzed in detail with industry representatives.”
