Russia sends NATO weapons seized in Ukraine to Iran

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has several times sent to Iran weapons and equipment captured on the battlefield, transferred to the Ukrainian side by the United States and NATO countries. Writes about it Present Tense.

During the war, US, NATO and other Western officials documented several cases of Russian troops seizing certain types of weapons transferred to Ukraine by the allies. We are talking about American Javelin anti-tank missile systems and Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems.

In most cases, Russia did not use captured weapons for its own purposes, but sent them to Iran, where they were dismantled and examined. Experts believe that Iran was trying to create its own version of this weapon. Russia, in this way, is pushing Iran to continue to support its invasion of Ukraine.

US officials do not believe the problem is widespread or systematic, and the Ukrainian military has made it a habit since the beginning of the war to report to the Pentagon any loss of US equipment and its capture by Russian forces. However, US officials acknowledge that the problem is difficult to trace.

It is not yet known whether Iran managed to copy and successfully apply US developments captured in Ukraine in creating its own weapons. Tehran has succeeded in this in the past. A key weapon in Iran's inventory, the Toophan anti-tank guided missile, was redesigned from the US BGM-71 TOW missile in the 1970s. In 2011, the Iranians intercepted a US-made Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel drone and reverse engineered it to create a new drone, which crossed into Israeli airspace in 2018 before being shot down.

According to the Ukrainian authorities and a number of foreign intelligence services, Iran regularly supplies Russia with kamikaze drones, which are used to attack Ukraine.

Russia officially denies these accusations. However, a representative of the Public Council under the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation let slip about the use of Iranian weapons during a live broadcast on the RBC TV channel. Later, Iran admitted that it supplied Russia with drones. The US, EU and UK have imposed sanctions on the Iranian drone manufacturer.
