Risk of blindness, coma and death: 9 hand sanitizers prohibited by the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised Americans not to use certain hand sanitizers, writes Newsweek.

These products are manufactured in Mexico and, according to FDA representatives, can be toxic if they come in contact with the skin or digestive tract.

The FDA said in publication on the official websitethat the disinfectant produced by Eskbiochem SA de CV contains human-hazardous methanol (wood alcohol).

Here are 9 hand sanitizers identified and prohibited by the FDA:

• All-Clean Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-002-01)
• Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-007-01)
• CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-008-04)
• Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-006-01)
• The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-010-10)
• CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-005-03)
• CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-009-01)
• CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-003-01)
• Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-001-01)

The FDA says methanol is not an acceptable ingredient in hand sanitizers and that Lavar Gel contains 81% methanol, while CleanCare No Germ contains 28% methanol.

“Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment, which is critical to potentially reversing the toxic effects of methanol poisoning,” the agency said. “Significant exposure to methanol can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent nervous system damage, or death.”
