“In this way they are trying to show that they are like everyone else, that they are simple people, and although they wear a suit and live in Washington, and drive an expensive car, they are the same people as everyone else - simple and eat simple food,” - says Olga Kamenchuk, a sociologist at Ohio State University.

Democrat candidate Pete Buttidzhich did not bypass their attention. Such visits are always accompanied by the press, because they must immediately be reported in the news.

“We don’t close when politicians come to us, they have lunch with everyone else, especially since the journalists who film the candidates’ lunch ask for this. They want a lively atmosphere, to have things together with ordinary people,” says Ben.

In election campaigns, food can serve as a message to the whole people, as well as to individual groups of voters. Buttidzhich, in order to gain the confidence of African-Americans, from whom he is not the most popular candidate, recovered for lunch with Al Shpatov, an activist for the rights of blacks. The meeting was held at the legendary Sylvia Restaurant, located in Harlem, New York.
