Aldrin is the only survivor of the world's first successful moon landing mission, Apollo 11.
Three American astronauts - Neil Armstrong (commander of the ship), Michael Collins (pilot of the main unit) and Buzz Aldrin, who was the pilot of the lunar compartment on this mission - landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. When the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the mission, two participants were alive - Aldrin and Michael Collins.

In 2002, Aldrin avoided prosecution on charges of assault when a former astronaut punched a man in the jaw as he demanded on camera to swear on the Bible that the moon landing was not staged.
The man who received Aldrin's slap in the face was conspiracy theorist screenwriter Bart Sibrel, who was convinced that the moon landing did not actually happen, and the footage broadcast to the whole world was filmed in a movie studio.
Buzz Aldrin ended his career at NASA in 1971, after which he headed the US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Base (California). In 1972 he retired.
