A series of tornadoes swept across the southeastern United States: one person died, dozens were injured

17 tornadoes swept across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. At least one person was killed and dozens were injured. Many buildings have been destroyed. The authorities are assessing the damage. Read more about the natural disaster told the publication The Washington Post.

In McKurtain County in southeast Oklahoma, County Emergency Manager Cody McDaniel confirmed the death of one person.

“The roads are currently blocked and we are trying to get to these places,” McDaniel said, noting that “one person has died in McKurtain County.” He did not provide any other information about the deceased.

County officials urged people to "stay clear of damaged areas" and downed power lines in areas such as Idabel, Broken Bow and Pickens. The statement said first responders and experts are assessing damages "block by block, house by house to make a thorough assessment." The Red Cross organized a shelter in the local church for those who were forced to leave their homes.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt tweeted that he is "praying for Oklahoma residents affected" by the tornado, noting that severe storms have hit several counties and flash flooding has also been reported.

In northeast Texas, at least 50 homes were damaged or destroyed in Lamar County, near the Oklahoma border, Sheriff Scott Cass's office said in a statement.

Tornadoes hit the region around 16 p.m. local time on November 00 and hit areas including Beaver Creek, Powderly, Hopewell and Caviness, he said. No deaths were reported, but 4 people ended up in the hospital. Two of them are in critical but stable condition.

One resident of rural Powderly in Lamar County said she took shelter in a closet with her boyfriend and cat during the tornado.

“We felt the cold air and felt the house shaking. Then we heard a noise like the ceiling in the hall in which we were sucked in, ”said a woman named Tammy. The roof of her house was damaged and the windows were broken.

In neighboring Hopkins County, home of the Texas city of Sulfur Springs, officials urged residents to take shelter from the tornado and said at least "four homes were damaged" but no injuries were reported.

Early on November 4, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center took the unusual step of declaring a 4 out of 5 "moderate risk" of severe weather. The red zone spanned far northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and southwest Arkansas.

This is only the fourteenth time since 2002 that a moderate risk has been declared in November, highlighting the relative rarity of such an event in the fall.

A "tornado state of emergency" has been declared for New Boston, Texas and Ashdown, Arkansas, only the second time in history that a state of emergency has been declared here due to a tornado.

Debris fell from the sky more than 10 miles (16 km) ahead of the tornado.
